Help build software that estimates body fat from photos
Built With Science is building software that estimates body-fat percentage from ordinary photos. To teach it well, we need photos of real people together with careful tape measurements. If you're 18 or older, you can take part from home.
What's involved
- Create an account and read the consent form. You sign it by typing your name.
- A few details about you — age, sex, ethnicity, height and weight.
- Tape measurements. Eight places on your body, each measured twice. Five more are optional — they're easier with someone to help.
- Three photos in your underwear — front, side and back — taken at home with your phone's timer.
It takes about 20–30 minutes. You can stop and come back later; your progress is saved. You must be 18 or older.
What you'll need
- A soft tape measure (the fabric kind used for sewing)
- A way to prop your phone upright at about waist height
- A plain wall, with room to stand 2.5–3 metres away from your phone
- Good, even light
- Underwear only for the photos, and long hair tied back
Your privacy
- Your face is blurred before anyone assesses your photos — and you check the blurred versions yourself before you submit.
- Location data is removed from your photos on your own phone, before they are uploaded.
- Your data is stored in Canada.
- You can delete everything, at any time, from your account.
What you get in return
Nothing — taking part is a contribution to research. You won't receive a body-fat estimate or any other result from this study.
